What drives interior painting cost in Traverse City

The nine things that move an interior painting quote, and how to compare quotes line by line.

Interior painting cost in Traverse City depends on paintable surface area, ceiling height, wall condition, trim and door count, color change, paint line and whether the home is occupied. Prep and repair take more time than the paint itself. Photos of each room give us what we need to price it.

How much wall and ceiling are there to paint?

Price follows paintable surface, not floor area. A room with tall walls, a vaulted ceiling or many windows has a different surface area than its floor plan suggests. We measure walls and ceilings, subtract openings and price by surface.

How high is the ceiling?

Stair halls, great rooms and vaulted ceilings need scaffolding or lifts. Equipment and the extra time for high work go into the quote. Lake houses in the region often have open great rooms with tall walls, so ask us about access early.

What condition are the walls in?

Smooth, sound walls take less prep. Holes, cracks, nail pops, water stains and rough plaster take repair, sanding and priming before paint. We list repairs by room so you can see them. Water damage needs the cause fixed first.

How much trim and how many doors are there?

Trim, casings, baseboards and doors take more labor per foot than walls. Enamel finishes show flaws, so prep is more careful. Doors can be brushed or sprayed. A house with a lot of trim costs more than a house with plain openings.

Are you changing the color?

Dark-to-light changes need primer and an extra finish coat to cover. Moving to a deep color also takes extra coats. Similar-to-similar changes take less. Tell us the old and new colors.

Which paint line do you choose?

Price per gallon rises from Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint to Cashmere and Duration Home, then to Emerald Interior and Emerald Designer Edition. Premium lines cost more and add hide, washability or a smooth finish. Ceilings take Eminence High Performance Ceiling Paint. Our recommendation by room is in Paint and process.

Is the house furnished and occupied?

Empty rooms go faster. Furnished rooms need moving and covering. Occupied homes need clean daily work areas and a plan for pets and kids. Seasonal homes that sit empty are often the easiest to schedule.

Is there wallpaper to remove?

Stripping wallpaper, cleaning the paste and repairing the wall adds a line to the quote. The wall underneath often needs skim and priming.

Are cabinets part of the job?

Cabinets get their own line in the quote because they need degreasing, sanding, priming and sprayed finish coats. See Cabinet painting.

How do prep and paint compare in time?

A room with sound walls takes less time than a room with cracks, dents and stains. Prep means repair, sanding, caulking and priming, and it takes more hours than the paint itself. Two quotes for the same room often differ more in repair scope than in paint.

Does the month matter for interior work?

Weather does not stop interior painting, so work can run in any month. Exterior painting fills the summer calendar, so ask about interior timing early if you want a particular month.

How do I keep the price down without cutting corners?

Clear the rooms before we arrive, use one color across a run of rooms, keep existing trim color and sheen when the trim is sound, and pick the paint line room by room. Keep the repair and priming in the scope. Skipped prep is where a finish fails.

How do I compare two painting quotes?

  1. Check the rooms and surfaces. Each should be listed.
  2. Check the prep. Look for repair, sanding, caulking and priming by name.
  3. Check the coats. The quote should say how many.
  4. Check the products. The paint line should be named for each surface.
  5. Check cleanup and protection. Look for floor and furniture cover and daily cleanup.
  6. Check the schedule. A start window and a finish window belong in the quote.
